<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Visiting Alghero Old Town represents a journey into the origins of the city. A walk through alleys, little squares and old buildings that have made the history of the<em> Catalan city</em> in <a href="https://www.blualghero-sardinia.com/en/north-sardinia/"><strong>Northern Sardinia</strong>.</a></p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">The different architectural styles span the main eras of its foundation. Starting from the <strong><em>Genoese</em> origins</strong> (1100), continuing with the <strong><em>Savoy </em>domination</strong> (1720) up to the era that most marked the culture of Alghero: that of the <strong><em>Spanish</em> domination</strong> (1354).</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">The<strong> walk in the historic center of Alghero</strong> is a fundamental step not only for the suggestion of its cobbled streets and old walls, but also for the traditional <em>Botteghe</em>, <strong>shops, bars and restaurants that animate the heart of the ancient town.</strong></p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_centro_storico_view-1024x768.jpg" alt="Historic Town Alghero" class="wp-image-2848" srcset="https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_centro_storico_view-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_centro_storico_view-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_centro_storico_view-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_centro_storico_view-1536x1153.jpg 1536w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_centro_storico_view-2048x1537.jpg 2048w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_centro_storico_view-400x300.jpg 400w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_centro_storico_view-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Some of <a href="https://www.blualghero.com/5-best-seafood-restaurants-in-alghero-old-town/" data-type="post" data-id="5580"><strong>Alghero&#8217;s best restaurants</strong> </a>and craft shops are located right inside these narrow alleys. Their typical space consisting of small rooms with barrel vaults in exposed sandstone, represent the identity of the town.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">We begin our tour in the <em>Alguer Vella</em>, starting from the <strong>Torre di Porta Terra</strong> as the starting point, considered the ancient gateway to the city.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_cupola_santa_maria_021-1024x768.jpg" alt="San Michele church" class="wp-image-2852" srcset="https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_cupola_santa_maria_021-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_cupola_santa_maria_021-300x225.jpg 300w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_cupola_santa_maria_021-768x576.jpg 768w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_cupola_santa_maria_021-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_cupola_santa_maria_021-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_cupola_santa_maria_021-400x300.jpg 400w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_cupola_santa_maria_021-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">The walk then continues through the main streets: V<strong>ia Roma, Via Gilbert Ferret, Via Carlo Alberto, Via Cavour.</strong> The ancient churches scattered among the narrow streets among which the <strong>Cathedral of Santa Maria</strong>, the church of <strong>San Francesco</strong> and the ancient church of <strong>San Michele</strong> stand out, whose dome covered with majolica is the symbol of the city.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-large-font-size">1.The Cathedral and the Bell Tower of Santa Maria</h3>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_cattedrale_santa_maria-1-768x1024.jpg" alt="Cathedral of Santa Maria Alghero" class="wp-image-2832" srcset="https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_cattedrale_santa_maria-1-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_cattedrale_santa_maria-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_cattedrale_santa_maria-1-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_cattedrale_santa_maria-1-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_cattedrale_santa_maria-1.jpg 1732w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Begun in 1500, it was completed in its present state only in the mid-1800s. The succession of centuries reflects into the church outlook with building styles and technics different along the construction era. The oldest part is the <em>Gothic-Catalan</em>, while the facade presents the typically neoclassical style.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="768" height="1024" src="https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_campanile_santa_maria-768x1024.jpg" alt="Campanile di Santa Maria Alghero ©bluAlghero" class="wp-image-2833" srcset="https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_campanile_santa_maria-768x1024.jpg 768w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_campanile_santa_maria-225x300.jpg 225w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_campanile_santa_maria-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_campanile_santa_maria-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https://www.blualghero.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/alghero_campanile_santa_maria.jpg 1732w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px" /></figure>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">One of the symbols of the city is the <strong>bell tower of Santa Maria</strong>. You can reach the top of the tower through five levels connected by a narrow spiral staircase. The bell tower is over <strong>40 meters high</strong> and from here you can admire a splendid panorama of the roofs of the old town houses.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-large-font-size">2. Church of San Francesco</h3>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">The<strong> oldest church in the historic center of Alghero</strong> with the adjoining convent dating back to 1400. This is an example of the <em>Gothic-Catalan</em> style featuring several works in marble and wood, as well as paintings of absolute value. The cloister and the hexagonal bell tower are also worth visiting. The bell tower was built in 1600 entirely in sandstone. Through a trap door you get to the bells room from which you can admire a beautiful view of the city.</p>

<div style="height:29px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-large-font-size">3. Tower of Sant&#8217;Elmo</h3>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">This is one of the most panoramic points of the historic center. From here you can admire the wide bay of Alghero, the port and the promontory of <strong>Capo Caccia</strong>. This tower located in the last stretch of the ramparts is dedicated to the saint navigator<strong> Sant&#8217;Erasmo</strong> (<em>Sant&#8217;Elmo in Catalan</em>) whose history is linked over the centuries to the city of Alghero. It is said that the Saint found his home in the cliffs of Capo Caccia. It can be accessed via a small stone staircase that leads to the circular base where you can rest to admire the beautiful landscape.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading has-large-font-size">4. Piazza Civica</h3>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Piazza Civica is considered the posh side of the Old Town. The square is surrounded by stately and elegant buildings combined with small craft and coral shops that overlook the main street. The square still remains the beating heart of the old city.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Among the most important buildings that overlook <strong>Piazza Civica</strong>, the <strong>Palazzo D&#8217;Albis</strong> in gothic style, dating back to the fifteenth century. This building became famous because in 1541 hosted <strong>Charles V </strong>and from whom he pronounced the famous phrase: <em>Bonita, por mi fé, y bien assentada &#8211; Beautiful, in my faith, and very solid &#8220;</em> referred to Alghero.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Other examples of historical architecture: <strong>Palazzo Serra</strong> dating back to 1800 and <strong>Palazzo Bolasco</strong> which was owned by the family of <em>Giuseppe Garibaldi. </em>On the square opens the <strong>Porta de la Mar</strong> which protected the entrance of the city from the sea storms.</p>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">If you&#8217;re looking for a beach to spend the whole day with crystal-clear sea, pine forest and services, Mugoni Beach is <strong>one of the best choices near Alghero.</strong></p>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Located inside Porto Conte Bay, about 16 km from the city center, it is a long stretch of light sand immersed in the <strong>Porto Conte Regional Natural Park</strong> and in the <strong>Capo Caccia &#8211; Isola Piana Marine Protected Area</strong>. Its position makes it one of the most sheltered beaches on the Coral Riviera, with often calm sea even on windy days.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

</ul>

<hr class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity"/>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-large-font-size">What is the beach like?</h2>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Mugoni is one of the largest beaches</strong> in the Alghero area. The sand is fine and light, while the sea has shades ranging from turquoise to deep blue.</p>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Behind the beach stretches a <strong>large pine forest</strong> that offers natural shade throughout the day, a rather rare feature along the coast and highly appreciated in the summer months.</p>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">The seabed slopes gently, making the beach particularly <strong>suitable for children</strong> and those who prefer to swim in shallow waters.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-large-font-size">Why choose Mugoni?</h2>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">One of Mugoni’s main strengths is its position inside <strong>Porto Conte Bay.</strong></p>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">Thanks to the natural conformation of the coast, the beach is often <strong>sheltered from the mistral</strong> and other prevailing winds. When the sea is rough on many beaches of the west coast, at Mugoni it is common to find much calmer conditions.</p>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">This is precisely one of the reasons why it is chosen by both residents and visitors. One of Alghero’s beaches with a low presence of posidonia oceanica (common seagrass) on the shoreline.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading has-large-font-size">Services</h2>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph">The beach offers everything you need to spend a day at the sea. </p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li class="has-medium-font-size">beach establishments</li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2. </strong>Wine tasting</h2>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Alghero is home to important wineries that produce excellent quality. Visits to the vineyards are perhaps to be postponed to sunnier days, but on rainy days we can devote ourselves exclusively to tastings (which is never a bad idea!).</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the most important wineries in Alghero is <em>Santa Maria La Palma</em>, which has brought to the city center a place where you can discover its history and immerse yourself in a sensory journey. &#8220;La Cantina&#8221; offers a mini-tasting accompanied by local food and an interesting <em>excursus</em> on the history of the vineyards. You can find it in Alghero at Via XXIV Maggio, 4.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you can get around by car, we suggest the tasting experience at the <strong>Ledà d&#8217;Ittiri farmhouse</strong> in the Alghero countryside. You can check availability and costs below.</p>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div data-gyg-href="https://widget.getyourguide.com/default/availability.frame" data-gyg-tour-id="397019" data-gyg-locale-code="en-EN" data-gyg-currency="EUR" data-gyg-widget="availability" data-gyg-theme="light" data-gyg-variant="horizontal" data-gyg-partner-id="8CBHBZF"></div>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. Play pool and drink a craft beer</h2>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When <strong>gray skies and rain prevent any outdoor activity</strong>, you can spend an afternoon playing pool and drinking craft beer. Doppio Malto recently opened in Alghero and offers a varied menu including snacks and meat dishes. Beer and pool, always a great combination, especially when it&#8217;s raining outside.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4. Watch a movie</h2>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The only one present in Alghero is the historic <em>Miramare</em> cinema. Recently renovated theater offers a good view of the screen and comfortable seats. The programming varies from international, Italian and even some Sardinian films. Too bad the original language programming is not always available.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5.Tea and pastries in the historic bakery</h2>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A coffee and a delicious<em> Neapolitan sfogliatella </em>will bring back a smile even in the downpour. &#8220;Ciro&#8221; the historic pastry shop in Alghero is definitely worth a visit. Founded in the early 1970s by Neapolitan master pastry chef Ciro it is one of the city&#8217;s landmarks for the undisputed quality of its pastries and café. Not to be missed even on sunny days….</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">6-Cooking class with meal included</h2>

<div style="height:40px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A fun activity to discover typical products and spend a day in pleasant company. In the cooking class you will learn how to <strong>make homemade pasta</strong> and other traditional Sardinian cooking tips. Check below the availability and make a reservation.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div data-gyg-href="https://widget.getyourguide.com/default/availability.frame" data-gyg-tour-id="335296" data-gyg-locale-code="en-EN" data-gyg-currency="EUR" data-gyg-widget="availability" data-gyg-theme="light" data-gyg-variant="horizontal" data-gyg-partner-id="8CBHBZF"></div>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the longest routes is the one that goes up to the small hamlet of <strong>Tramariglio</strong>. From here you can visit <em>Casa Gioiosa</em>, the former penal colony and now converted into the official headquarter of the Porto Conte Park. Inside the old prison it is possible to visit the cells and undertake a visit among the interactive itineraries.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2. Neptune&#8217;s Grotto</h2>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the most visited attractions in Sardinia and Italy (over 100 thousand visitors a year).</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Neptune Grotto is much larger than the one that can actually be visited today. The path winds for about 1km inside the limestone cave. A real natural jewel with the impressive <strong>stalactites and stalagmites</strong>, formed over millions of years (the stalactites grow a few millimeters every 10 years).</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Inside the cave there is even a salt lake and various areas of great interest including the<strong> Smith Room</strong>, at the center of which stands the <strong>Great Organ</strong> which &#8211; definetely &#8211; recalls the pipes of an organ.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Cabirol staircase:</strong> the Neptune caves can be reached both by sea and by land. You can drive up to the car park located on the top of the promontory. From here you enter the staircase. The famous <strong>Cabirol staircase</strong> (Scala del Cabirol), on the ridge of the cliff, built in the 1960s it has 654 steps!</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3. Palmavera Nuragic Village</h2>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Sardinian historical and archaeological heritage boasts multi-millennial sites. The Nuragic village of Palmavera is part of this <strong>3000-year-old</strong> history.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Its grandeur contains all the strength of the Nuragic people dating back to the<strong> Bronze Age</strong>. Entirely built in stone (sandstone and limestone) it has about <strong>50 huts</strong> and <strong>two main towers</strong> inside.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It can also be visited inside the main tower and climb up to the top of the tower via the original internal stairs. The <em>nocturnal visit</em> &#8211; which is organized on some summer evenings &#8211; is also very suggestive. </p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is one of the most important nuragic villages in Sardinia, and is only a few minutes drive from the center of Alghero.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4. Mase Museum</h2>

<div style="height:31px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<div style="height:30px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Who hasn&#8217;t read the novel <em><strong>The Little Prince</strong></em>? One of the most beautiful (and best-loved) books in the world. Alghero wanted to dedicate a museum to its author whose history is linked precisely to the territories of the Porto Conte Park. <strong>Antoine de Saint-Exupery</strong> spent the last few months of his life in Alghero before disappearing during his last flight in the sky over France.</p>

<div style="height:50px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The museum is located inside the Aragonese tower of 1500 and is arranged on three levels. A small museum full of curiosities about the author who <strong>stayed in Alghero in 1944</strong>. Rich in texts, photos, documents and objects of that time. On the top floor from the terrace, you can enjoy the beautiful view over the Porto Conte bay.</p>

<div style="height:100px" aria-hidden="true" class="wp-block-spacer"></div>
