Visiting the Neptune’s Caves in Alghero: what do you need to know

Hello, if you’re planning a vacation in Alghero, a visit to the famous Neptune’s Caves is a must. This natural wonder, nestled in the Capo Caccia promontory, is one of Sardinia’s most fascinating attractions. With stalactites, stalagmites, and an underground lake, it’s an experience you won’t forget.

In this article, I’ll tell you everything you need to know to plan your visit: how to get there, how much it costs, what to expect, and some practical tips to make the most of your visit to the caves.

Why visit the Neptune’s Caves in Alghero?

The Neptune’s Caves are a karst formation dating back about 2 million years. Discovered in the 18th century by a fisherman, they now attract over 150,000 visitors annually due to their unique beauty. Located on the northwestern side of Capo Caccia, within the protected area of the Porto Conte Regional Natural Park, the caves offer a journey into the heart of the earth, among spectacular chambers, saltwater lakes, and breathtaking geological formations.

It’s a perfect experience to enjoy with the whole family in Alghero, and it will surely enrich your trip to Sardinia.

How to get to Neptune’s Caves

You have two options to reach the caves: by land or by sea. Both have their charm, so choose based on your time, budget, and the type of experience you’re looking for.

By land: the Escala del Cabirol

If you love to move and don’t mind a bit of effort, you can reach the caves on foot by descending the famous Escala del Cabirol (Roe Deer Staircase), a staircase of about 654 steps carved into the cliff overlooking the sea.

The view is spectacular, but the descent and ascent require some energy, so wear comfortable shoes and bring a bottle of water, especially if you visit in spring or summer. To reach the Capo Caccia parking area, where the staircase begins, you can:

Barca Grotte di Nettuno

If you prefer a more relaxing experience, you can reach the caves by boat from Alghero’s port or the Cala Dragunara pier in Porto Conte. The trip takes about 40 minutes and lets you admire the Coral Riviera, with its cliffs and the Foradada Island.

Companies like Navisarda or Frecce delle Grotte offer regular trips. No reservation is needed for the boats, but the boat ticket (about €17 for adults) does not include the cave entrance fee, which is paid separately.

Tip: check the sea conditions before departure, as the caves close during bad weather. Call the official cave number (+39 345 741 8361) or check the Neptune’s Cave Facebook and Instagram pages.

What to expect during the visit

Neptune caves Alghero

Once inside, prepare to be amazed! The guided tour will take you through a path of a few hundred meters, among spectacular chambers like:

  • Lamarmora Lake: one of the largest saltwater lakes in Europe, with crystal-clear waters.
  • Acquasantiera: a 2-meter-high stalagmite with natural basins that collect rainwater.
  • Organ Chamber: dominated by an imposing column, the largest in the cave.
  • Music Tribune: a balcony overlooking the lake, perfect for unforgettable photos.

The guides speak multiple languages and will share interesting facts about the caves’ formation and history. However, with large groups, it can be hard to follow the explanations or take in everything calmly. For a quieter experience, choose less crowded times, like early morning.

Practical tips for your visit

  • Clothing: comfortable shoes are a must, especially for the Escala del Cabirol. Bring a hat and water if visiting in spring or summer, as the sun can be strong.
  • Weather: always check sea conditions by calling +39 345 741 8361 or following official social media updates. In case of closure, the ticket office will contact you via email to reschedule.
  • Children: the staircase can be tiring for young kids, so consider the sea option if traveling with children under 7 (free entry).
  • Photos: you can take photos, but no flash to preserve the environment. The path is well-lit, so you’ll get great shots!
  • Accommodation: to stay close to the caves, consider lodging in Porto Conte (10 minutes by car) or near Alghero’s port for the boat.
