Oh no, summer in Alghero is not over yet! September offers pleasant temperatures and crystal-clear waters. This month, with fewer tourists and a sense of tranquility, turns into a perfect refuge for those seeking a relaxing vacation.
5 beaches not to be missed in Alghero during September

If you are looking for a quiet, sunny holiday in the Mediterranean, Sardinia is the right place in September

1. Maria Pia beach

Maria Pia Beach is one of the most famous beaches in Alghero. With its white sand dunes and turquoise waters, this beach is a true paradise for swimmers. In September, you will find fewer people compared to the summer months, making it easier to find a quiet spot to relax in the sun. Not far from the historic center, it is easily accessible by bus or bicycle. It is also ideal for children due to the gently sloping seabed.

Activities in the area: Along the Maria Pia Beach, you will find numerous establishments with bars, restaurants, umbrella and sunbed rentals, and various water activities.

Location: The beach is located along Viale I Maggio and is approximately 4 kilometers from the city center. You can easily reach it using the AF public bus or the Beach Bus.

2. Bombarde beach

A part of the beach features rocks, but it is predominantly sandy. As it’s not too large, it tends to get crowded quickly, especially in high season in August and on weekends. It’s better to plan a visit in September to fully enjoy this beach, which is a true institution of the Alghero Riviera.

Activities in the area: Beach chair and umbrella rentals, water activities, bars, and restaurants.

In September, you can enjoy it in peace and take pleasant walks among the hidden coves around the tower. What’s typical of this beach is its clear and refreshing water!

Activities in the area: The beach is equipped with facilities, bar, restaurant, and offers SUP, kayak, and pedal boat rentals.

This small beach is famous for its extraordinary location (right next to the Capo Caccia promontory) and the emerald green water. It’s a great place for snorkeling and enjoying the beautiful seabed rich in marine life. From the pier, boats depart for the Neptune’s Grotto, which can make it quite crowded.

Wine and Harvest in Alghero: a journey to discover the wines of Alghero in September

September is the perfect month to discover Alghero from a different perspective. The Catalan city is no longer crowded with summer tourists, the days are still bright and pleasant, the beaches in September are quieter and more accessible, but above all the countryside comes alive with the harvest, a ritual that unites community, tradition, and future. In this period, wine becomes the true star, reflecting the deep bond between Alghero and its land.

Vineyards and Grapes of Alghero

The hills surrounding the city are a mosaic of sandy, clay, and limestone soils, always caressed by the mistral wind. This unique combination gives the wines freshness, intense aromas, and a distinctive minerality.

Torbato, a very rare grape and symbol of Alghero, introduced during the Catalan era.

Vermentino di Sardegna DOC, the most beloved white wine, fresh, citrusy, and saline.

Cannonau, one of the oldest Mediterranean grapes, linked to Sardinian longevity.

Cagnulari, native to the northwest, with a bold and spicy character.

The Historic Wineries

When talking about wine in Alghero, two key names immediately come to mind:

Sella & Mosca, founded in 1899 by two entrepreneurs from Piedmont, is one of the largest wine estates in Europe with over 500 hectares of vineyards. It introduced Torbato and other Alghero wines to the world, becoming a true institution.

Cantina Santa Maria La Palma, founded in 1959 thanks to the commitment of numerous local winegrowing families, is now a cooperative that brings together more than 300 members. Its vineyards stretch over 700 hectares, making it one of the largest and most representative wineries in Sardinia. The winery helped establish Vermentino di Alghero as an internationally recognized excellence.

These two historic wineries, along with smaller family-run estates that promote native grapes like Cagnulari, have made Alghero one of the wine capitals of Sardinia.

Sardinia’s relationship with wine dates back to the Nuragic era: archaeological finds show the presence of vines as early as 3,000 years ago. The Phoenicians, Romans, and later the Catalans enriched this heritage by introducing new varieties and winemaking techniques. In Alghero, the strong Catalan influence can still be found today in Torbato, a grape that remains unique in its kind.

f you want to savour the true taste of the Alghero sea, the secret is simple: buy the fish where many locals buy it too. Every day the boats return to the harbour with the fresh catch and, depending on the season and the weather, you can find some of the best specialities of the Gulf of Alghero.

Whether you’re staying in an apartment with a kitchen or simply want a more authentic experience, here’s where to buy fresh fish in Alghero.

1. Mercato del pescato locale

The reference point for those looking for the freshest catch is the Local Fish Market, located in the port area of Alghero, on Banchina Rafael Catardi.

Here the local fishermen sell directly and the offer changes every day according to the catch. It is the ideal place to buy fish just caught, often only a few hours after the boats have returned. Prices are reasonable and the choice is varied, but it depends on the day.

Useful tips

Arrive preferably between 7:30 and 10:00 to find the best selection.

Availability varies daily: don’t always expect the same products.

Ask what the catch of the day is: it is often also the one with the best quality-price ratio.

2. Mercato Civico di Alghero

Via Sassari 12, Alghero

If you prefer to do all your shopping in one place, the Civic Market, right in the city centre, is an excellent alternative.

Inside you will find several specialised fishmongers, along with stalls selling fruit, vegetables, meat, cheeses and typical Sardinian products with excellent cured meats and cheeses.

It is the historic place of the people of Alghero, and it is a practical solution especially if you are staying in the historic centre or nearby. Inside you can also eat fish prepared on the spot, at the La Boqueria restaurant.

The market is open only in the morning until 2:00 p.m. If you arrive by car, parking in the surrounding area is not very easy, being in the centre.

A small market in the northern area of Alghero, with only a few stalls available but with excellent quality products. There is a fresh fish counter, meat, bakery, local fruit and vegetables. Open only in the morning until 1:00 p.m. Parking nearby is easy to find.

What is the best period?

The sea always decides what it offers. Some products are available almost all year round, while others follow a strong seasonality. Indicatively you can always or often find:

Can you pay by card? Many operators accept cards and contactless payments, but it is advisable to also have some cash.

Is there fish every day? Yes, but availability depends on sea conditions and the activity of the fishing fleet. In case of bad weather some species may not be available.

Is cleaning the fish free? Yes, ask directly at the stall and they will be happy to hand you the fish perfectly cleaned and ready to be cooked!

If you’ve chosen Alghero as your base for your holiday, you’re in an ideal position to explore some of the most fascinating places in north-western Sardinia. In less than an hour and a half by car you can reach historic villages, spectacular beaches and unforgettable landscapes, perfect for a day trip.

Here are 3 towns to visit from Alghero that absolutely worth a visit

1. Bosa: the colourful village on the Temo river

Distance from Alghero: 45 km
Travel time: about 50-60 minutes by car

The panoramic road SP105 Alghero-Bosa is considered one of the most beautiful in Sardinia. It runs along the sea offering spectacular views of the western coast, so much so that the journey itself becomes part of the experience.

Arriving in Bosa you will find yourself in front of one of the most characteristic villages on the island: pastel-coloured houses climbing up the hill, stone alleyways, artisan shops and the Temo river, the only navigable river in Sardinia.

Climbing up to the Malaspina Castle you can admire one of the most beautiful views in the area, while a stroll along the riverfront is perfect for a relaxing break.

Not to be missed

During the summer, access to the beach is regulated and requires online booking, so it is advisable to organise it a few days in advance.

In addition to Pelosa, the small tourist harbour and excursions to the Asinara National Park, one of the most fascinating natural areas on the island, are well worth a visit.

Car or bus?

If you are travelling without a car, all three destinations can also be reached by public transport (with some changes)

Bosa is the easiest to reach thanks to direct ARST connections.

Stintino has seasonal direct connections to La Pelosa or buses with a change in Porto Torres.

Castelsardo generally requires a change in Sassari, so it is the least convenient destination by public transport.

If instead you have a car available, you will be able to move with greater freedom, stop at panoramic points along the route and visit more places on the same day.

If you rent a car with Discover Cars to get the best rates and book directly online

Tip

If you are staying in Alghero for at least a week, dedicate one day to each of these destinations. Each one offers a different experience: Bosa captivates with its authentic charm and riverfront, Stintino offers some of the most beautiful waters in the Mediterranean, while Castelsardo will take you on a dive into history among medieval walls and breathtaking views.

If you’re wondering which towns are worth visiting from Alghero, these are without a doubt the best choices!

Is it easy to visit Alghero without a car?

Alghero is a human-scale city: the airport is only 20 minutes away by bus, the center isn’t too large, and the main attractions are close by. The Lido beach is just a few minutes from the city center, and all other beaches are easily accessible by public transport, on foot, or by bike. Getting around without a car offers several advantages:

Convenience: no need to worry about parking = less stress!

Savings: you avoid rental and fuel costs.

Local immersion: walking or using public transport lets you experience Alghero like a local.

If you are spending your stay in Alghero, you absolutely must visit Lazzaretto Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in Alghero. Not far from the nearby Bombarde Beach, it’s a must-stop for your vacation on the Coral Riviera. This guide tells you everything you need to know: why to visit, how to get there, what you’ll find at the beach, where to park, what activities to do nearby, and other interesting facts.

Why Visit Lazzaretto Beach in Alghero

Lazzaretto Beach is a gem of the northwest coast of Sardinia, just 10 km from Alghero. Here’s why you absolutely need to add it to your list:

Crystal-clear sea: transparent waters with shades of blue and turquoise, perfect for swimming and snorkeling.

White sand: fine, soft sand under your feet, ideal for relaxing in the sun.

Hidden coves: Around the main beach, you’ll find small, wild inlets, perfect for those seeking privacy and untouched nature.

Nature and history: Surrounded by Mediterranean scrub and overlooked by the Lazzaretto Tower, it offers a mix of natural beauty and historical charm.

Easy access: Close to Alghero, it’s convenient to reach yet retains an authentic atmosphere.

How to Get to Lazzaretto Beach

Getting to Lazzaretto Beach is easy, whether you’re traveling by car, public transport, or bike.

By car: From Alghero, take the SS 127 bis towards Fertilia and Porto Conte. After about 8 km, you’ll see a sign on the left indicating “Lazzaretto Beach.” Turn onto the narrow road – it’s quite tight, so be cautious when passing oncoming cars ( during peak season, the direction of traffic may be reversed, so you might need to access it from the Bombarde entrance), follow the road to the parking lot. Travel time: 15 minutes. Rent a car from Alghero airport: prices start at €20/day, check on DiscoverCars

By public transport: ARST urban buses connect Alghero to the beach. Depart from the city center (main stop at Via Catalogna) and get off at the “Lazzaretto” stop. The trip takes about 20 minutes. Check schedules on the ARST website, especially in low season. There’s also the BeachBus shuttle service that departs from Alghero and reaches this beach and others in the area.

By bicycle: A bike path starts in Alghero and goes almost all the way to the beach (9 km). The last stretch is on a regular road, which can be busy in peak season. To avoid the big climb on the return, break it up by taking the side road via Le Bombarde.

What You’ll Find at the Beach

Main beach: About 300 meters of white sand, wider in the center and narrower at the sides. Perfect for laying out a towel or renting sunbeds and umbrellas.

Clear waters: The water is cold (freezing!) even in summer, but the transparency is spectacular. Ideal for swimming and observing the sandy seabed with some rocks.

Services: There are two kiosk-bars with food, drinks, and ice cream. Toilets and showers are also available.

Accessibility: A ramp facilitates access for people with disabilities from the right-side bar area.

Coves: To the east and west of the main beach, small paths through the Mediterranean scrub lead to intimate coves, perfect for those seeking peace and quiet.

Parking at Lazzaretto Beach

Parking is straightforward but requires some planning, especially in peak season. Here are your options:

Paid parking: Near the beach, there are guarded lots (cost: €1-2/hour, varies by season). Spaces for cars and campers are available, but they fill up quickly, especially in July and August.

Free parking: Alternatively, you can opt for the internal dirt road on the right, but it fills up very easily and often becomes chaotic. Also, be careful not to park along the roadside curbs, as parking is prohibited and fines are common.

Motorcycles: Parking for two-wheelers is free in the guarded area.

Tip: Plan to arrive by 9:00 AM in summer to avoid stress (weekends are generally best avoided, or opt for a bike or motorcycle).

Activities in the Area

Snorkeling: The shallow, varied seabed, especially on the rocky sides of the beach, is stunning and perfect for exploring fish and starfish with a mask and snorkel.

Hiking: Trails through the Mediterranean scrub lead to coves and offer spectacular views of the Lazzaretto Tower. → What excursions to do in Alghero
