The Carnival of Alghero, known in Catalan as “Lo Carraixali de l’Alguer”, is one of the most anticipated events of the year in the beautiful Catalan city of Sardinia. This year, from 7 to 21 February 2026, Alghero turns into a stage of colour, tradition, and fun for the whole family.
The Carnival of Catalan Traditions
Alghero, the “Sardinian Barceloneta,” celebrates Carnival while maintaining strong ties to its Catalan roots. The event combines local culture, collective memory, and entertainment, renewing itself annually with a program that embraces all generations.
Main Events 2026

The 2026 edition of the Alghero Carnival will span two weeks of celebrations, with the key dates concentrated between Fat Thursday (February 12), Fat Tuesday (February 17), and Fat Saturday (February 21). The program is currently being finalized through a public call for proposals involving local artists, associations, and cultural operators.
The Carnival of the nearby Villages
Traditionally, on the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday, the villages of Alghero come alive with a parade of allegorical floats. In Guardia Grande, folk groups and traditional Sardinian masks such as the Mamutzones and Sos Tintinnatos showcase popular creativity. A jury awards prizes to the best floats, celebrating the work of local communities.
Children’s Carnival – Alghero, City of Children’s Carnival
The most exciting event involves hundreds of participants, including students, teachers, and parents. Born in 1982 with “Ragazzi in Scena,” this tradition transforms the historic center into a river of color where schools parade in costume, focusing on educational themes such as fairy tales, literature, the environment, and recycling. A true community celebration, perfect for families.
The Piñatas in the Square
The day brings the traditional game of Pentolacce to Piazza Sulis, preceded by an interactive theatrical performance inspired by Sardinian tradition, like the one in 2025, themed “The Tale of Peppédda and Su Piràstru.” After the ticket draw, the audience actively participates in the game with prizes up for grabs, in an atmosphere of joy and sharing that concludes the Carnival festivities.
Collateral events
In addition to the main events, the Carnival extends into the neighborhoods and villages with live shows, street performing arts, music, theater, and dance.
